Kitchen progress, or lack thereof

Just so you know, I've made very little progress on the big kitchen project. Somehow I manage to overcommit myself (shocker, I know) so I haven't been home much to work on it. In the past few days I managed to spackle holes in the walls, spackle holes in the doors (the new hardware is different sizing), buy nearly all the supplies, decide on and buy new hardware and hinges, and TSP washed most of the walls for painting. Tonight I put the first coat of paint on the ceiling. One more to go on tomorrow and then that part is done and on to the walls.

The part I am truly dreading is the cupboard doors - that feels like a major undertaking with the cleaning, sanding, removing from cupboards, etc. I decided to start by just removing and doing the doors for the side cabinets - by the long counter. Once the insides of those cabinets are done, I can move the dishes, etc from the other cupboards into those, so as to still manage to live in my house / kitchen during this project.

Then my friend came over and suggested painting the insides of the cabinets a different color (than white like the outside will be). Now I'm agonizing over that idea... I love it, but is it going to be a pain? What if I sell the house? Will someone be turned off to open the doors and see blue... or green... or purple? More decisions? Help!!

And now two people have suggested removing the row of overhead cabinets between the living room and kitchen (over the sink)... I kind of love the idea... and kind of don't know if I can live without those cabinets... and really am not sure I should be adding more work to this project... hmmm...

Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

Oh yeah, and in answer to several people's questions: YES! You can come help if you want! Just call and let me know when you want to come :) In fact, if you want to see me in the next couple weeks, you may have to just show up in painting clothes.

My vote is going with all white for exterior/interior of the cabinets. As for the over-the-sink cabinets... On the one hand, I really think removing them would look awesome. On the other hand, that would mean quite a bit less storage space! I guess my vote is "no" for that...unless there's some way to make up that storage space. Yikes, that could be even more work!

Whatever you decide, I'm excited to see the results! I think your kitchen is going to look awesome! Have you decided about counters yet?

I'm with Betsy - all white inside and out is the best. Looking at houses with lots of "character" means lots of work to undo it. And all white is still classy. Even if you don't plan on moving out in the foreseeable future - what if you start getting tired of the other color...insides of cabinets aren't fun to paint.

And really...I've been in your kitchen enough times to know that you can spare NO storage space. You need every square inch...especially when you have roommates. Keep 'em.

And those were my thoughts...all of them. My brain's completely emptied out now. Are you happy?

I would keep the upper cabinets to keep the kitchen separate from the familyroom. If I had to do it over again in my house I would clearly define the kitchen.
