Well hello...

There it is...

my freakin' 'uge ovarian cyst... found it Tuesday night after spending the night in the ER in horrible pain. Oh boy. Without getting into the details, they need to operate to remove it. Told me it will be like a cesarean section, only without a baby to show for it... awesome. Hopefully we can schedule the date for the surgery on Tuesday... and then we'll have several weeks of recovery where I'm not supposed to move... it's not going to be pretty folks. They may have to tie me to the bed.

Steam the broccoli

Whew. It was a full evening at the homestead-- probably utterly boring for most of you-- but since my blog is called "Stream of Consciousness" that's exactly what you should expect.

I got home from work and said hello to the babies at the door. The mother robin yelled her greeting from the tree (as usual) and threatened my life if I got much closer. All three of them were squirming like crazy and one kept spreading his wings and flapping around. Oooh. Run in for the camera. Oooh look, the first roses are blooming. And one of the lilies. Oooh. Baby birds. Right. Camera. As I approached the nest for our daily photo shoot, suddenly there was a flurry of wings. All three flew out of the nest, practically into my face, while Mother and Father Robin started frantically flying around chirping like crazy. There I was, recovering from the shock, and realizing our babies had just left the nest. I watched them for a few minutes, and was relieved to see that although Curly was hopping around in the street, he had the good sense and ability to get out of the way of that green pick up truck.

Next I lazied around for probably half an hour, thinking I should change into "home" clothes, and not doing anything about it. I ate a bowl of cereal, changed, and headed out for a round of ball. Ball is more fun when it's in the 80's out. The Suze gets tired a lot faster and drinks out of the new (garage sale) doggie pool a lot more. She also doesn't look so pathetic when I call it quits after a mere 15 minutes of kicking the ball.

The Homie (yes, still worth the hype) decides to mow the backyard while I rototill the vegetable garden that I managed to clean out and weed (mostly) over the weekend. It was hot, but lovely. I do love summer. The veggie garden is now tilled and ready for planting this weekend!

Then I went in and sat down and remembered I'm making dinner for some friends who recently had a baby... hmmm. It's after 9 and I haven't figured it out. I googled a recipe for chicken pasta salad, breaking my own rule about not experimenting with new recipes on other people (I always manage to break this rule). Chicken caesar salad it is! I make bread dough for rolls, and set it to rise, put a brownies in the oven, set the timer for the homie, and head to the grocery store for the other stuff.

Sadly, the babies have not returned to sleep in their old nest. I'm going to miss them. Already having serious empty nest syndrome (literally). And yes, I realize I'm a big dork, I don't really care. I liked those guys!

Grocery store. Home. Make lots of this salad. Hey if I'm making it for one household, we may as well have it here too. Put rolls in the oven. Cook the chicken. Don't bother checking that recipe again, just start throwing stuff into the bowl. Mmmm. Now I'm hungry. The house smells like garlic herb rolls, chicken and garlic, brownies. The dog are drooling hungrily at my feet. I finish up, wash dishes, set the coffee pot for morning, sit down at my computer and put my feet up and finally look at the recipe... darn. Totally forgot to steam the broccoli, put it in raw without even thinking about it. Sigh. Some days you just can't win.

But... there is dinner waiting for my friends tomorrow (even if the broccoli is raw)... and for me... and I get to spend time with my sister who I never seem to see enough of (and who I already miss more than I can say-- even before she's moved across the country)... and the whole house fan is pulling the cool night air through the hot house and filling the house with the smell of lilacs... and my bed is calling.

This has been Stream of Consciousness at the Homestead. Join us next time when...

Baby David

I'm even more fascinated, in love, head over heels, total mush over this little guy...

Isn't he beautiful? New babies are such miracles.

10 Days Old

I know I am way too fascinated by these guys. But they are right outside my door- in fact, these pics were taken through the storm door because they are less shy (or they don't know I'm there) through the door, whereas when I stand on a chair to get pics into the nest, they kind of nuzzle down into the nest and try to hide. Anyway, I can't believe how big these guys are getting. And yes, I think they are always hungry these days... reminds me of some toddlers I know...

Celebrations with the fam

May birthdays included Brendan, Hannah, and Ellie. Great to be with the fam. And seriously, could those munchkins be any cuter?

Yeah, more of the babies...

The Three Stooges

They are five days old today and I can hardly believe the difference!! I haven't looked in the nest in a couple days (see Mother Robin, I am at least trying to be good). Today Leslie and I were walking in and I saw a beak sticking out of the nest and thought it was the mother, but how was she sitting so low in the nest. We looked closer and look at these guys!!! In just a couple days, they have tripled in size, grow real beaks, gotten feathers, and opened their eyes. Crazy. (And yes, still hard to get decent pics because of all the leaves in the way).

A Little Pick me up

The rest of progress is feeling very slow (coat upon coat of painting cabinet doors... more sanding... more coats of paint) ... s.l.o.w. So today we will just appreciate the comparison...

The old...

And the new...

Pretty great, huh?

Some great stuff about today...

1. Mass
2. It is Friday
3. One of my coworkers who is just amazing
4. It is Friday
5. The sun is shining
6. It's breezy and beautiful
7. baby birds
8. A bike ride all over town with Suzie in search of my nephew's baseball game. I left Maggie home b/c yesterday's 4 mile ride was really too much for her. So in spite of the howling as we rode down the block, it was just me and the Suze... which ended up being really good since we rode much further than anticipated to find said game.
9. My munchkin buddies at the game-- so stinking cute. Only I felt bad because one of them is afraid of Suzie apparently, so I didn't get to visit with her. But the others were fine and I was a big hit for bringing water.
10. My adult friends at the game too :)
11. Home sweet home
12. Fun plans for tomorrow
13. That I am home and not out because I couldn't say no again (another story for another time)
14. Did I mention that I love weekends?
15. I'm off to do some more cabinet door painting-- the last coat for most of the doors (only a few need another one after this. Can't wait to be done!)

The New Arrivals

I am proud to introduce the new arrivals at the Nichols Homestead...

Yesterday the mother seemed particularly needy, flying back and forth and back and forth and never out of sight of the nest. (Yeah, don't ask me how I know when a bird is being particularly needy...) So I held my camera up to see this:

The babies were hatching!! And everytime I got near the nest, the mother robin sat in the maple tree out front yelling at me to back off. Sigh. Sometimes I can't help myself!

Today I actually brought a chair out to get a better look, and with the aid of a flashlight (since the rosebush leaves really make it hard to get a good flash picture), I got a couple pics. Aren't they cute??? I also liked that when the bush shook even a little, they opened their beaks for food. Awww. I'm calling them the Three Stooges (it's hard to tell, but there are three of them in there).

And I'm happy to report the mother is alive and well and has managed to escape the talented jaws of the BOC.

Garlic Hummus

I have a recent addiction... here goes... I LOVE garlic lovers hummus. Love love love it. As in, I am tempted to eat a tub of it per day (though I do try to restrain myself). Anyway, this is a rather expensive hobby as the family size container, a mere 17 oz. is nearly $6 (which is approx. $0.35/oz). Yikes. So today I decided to try making the stuff and see how it is. Naturally I found a recipe on the web, but I changed it significantly enough as I went along that I can't even really cite that recipe. Also, though that recipe was titled garlic hummus, I had to add significantly more garlic to mine. I prefer garlic with a touch of chick pea and not the other way around. So here's my new recipe...

Reenie's Garlic Hummus
3 c. (1 large can) chick peas

4 T. Tahini (sesame paste- found in the oriental food aisle)

2 T. Olive oil

8-10 t. minced garlic (the recipe called for cloves of garlic "crushed" but since I always have minced garlic on hand, I went with that. And doubled the amount).

juice of 2 lemons (I hand juiced 2 lemons, and then probably added another teaspoon of lemon juice to give it a little more zest)

1 1/2 t. salt

1 t. course ground pepper

1/2 t. oregano

Put everything into the food processor and make a paste. Yuuummmm. Makes approx. 4 cups of delicious garlic hummus, emphasis on the garlic... (and yes, I may add more garlic next time).

Pricing-- most of this is a guess, but probably a reasonable comparison.
chick peas $2
tahini ($10 for the jar) $2.50
minced garlic $.25
olive oil $.20
oregano, salt, pepper $0.05
lemons $1
Grand total: $6.00 for 32 oz. = $0.19 / oz.

What are you waiting for? Go make some. You won't regret it! (Except you, my dear mother, you won't like this at all- it tastes distinctly like garlic :) Mmmmmmm.

The entertainment 'round these parts

Dear Blog,

Today was one of those entertaining evenings. You eat dinner on the patio with your homie. The dogs running around, barking at oncoming dogs, checking out the scenery. You finish eating and Suzie wants to play ball. So you get up and throw the ball. Then you rile Maggie up and get her racing around the yard like a maniac. You turn to the homie "I love it when Maggie does this" as Maggie laps the yard, a crazed look in her eye. And then proceeds to run, at full speed, with her 65 lbs of crazy, right into you. Body slam! You twist around, crash to the uneven patio, skinning your knee and losing a slipper. The homie wets her pants. Maggie stares at you like you've completely lost your mind, from a safe distance away. Then as you sit on the patio examining the skinned knee and the homie speaks of needing the bathroom (too late) and the look on your face as the crazy body slammed into you. Ah yes. It was another great night at the homestead.

Back at it...

Well, my extended weekend is officially over. Naturally I waited until 10:59 to put in that load of laundry so I'll have clean clothes for work tomorrow... so I find myself with a few minutes waiting for the wash to finish...

Naturally, I didn't finish everything I wanted to (that is impossible). But I did make good progress:
- I got all the cabinet doors prepped and primed (and might I remind you I do have a lot of doors)
- and most of them also have one side with one coat of topcoat (have to wait 24 hours between coats)
- I spent way too much time on Saturday installing the floor transitions (from the kitchen to the neighboring rooms). If it has "Simple Solutions" as the title, expect a royal pain. The subfloor changes made some problems and required some... uh... adjustments. Got 2 of the 3 done, but that last one needed to be cut down and since I don't have the right saw for that (in spite of currently housing my brother's jigsaw, my brother-in-law's sawsall, and my own 2 saws). Anyway, my dad is going to trim that down for me and then I can install the last transition.
- I also did some yard work- mostly normal stuff, mowing the jungle, picking up something dead, and some weeding. Lots more to do on that.
- Cleaned out the guest room
- Saw Guys and Dolls play at the local high school- a bunch of teens I love were in it and did a fabulous job!
- Saw Footloose in Toledo at my housemate's cousin's school where he teaches. Also fun, but let's face it, without the great story line of Guys and Dolls and missing all the fabulous high schoolers I actually know... yeah, definitely didn't measure up, though entertaining. It was also fun to meet some of Leslie's family who I hadn't met yet.
- Celebrated my sister's birthday with the fam on Sunday-- thanks to Donal and Lindsey for hosting a great family party at their place for the first time.
- Played softball Sunday afternoon
- Bathed some dogs (the dead smell is gone at last!!)

And am now regretting not taking the whole week off... nonetheless, it was great to have an extended weekend to get some projects done around here and to just be home. And tomorrow, we're back at it...
